Why Ethanol Sucks

I'm a big believer in alternative energy. However, ethanol is not a good idea. It just won't work. Here are some reasons why

  • We just can't produce enough ethanol to meet our energy needs. Estimates have came out that "if every bushel of U.S. corn, wheat, rice, and soybean were used to produce ethanol, it would only cover about 4% of U.S. energy needs on a net basis."
  • Producing ethanol will just drive food prices up. People are already sick of food prices increasing just because of transportation costs. If we start subsidizing ethanol, the amount of crops for food produced will dramatically drop, and when supply drops and demand remains the same, prices WILL rise
  • We don't even know if the energy required to produce ethanol, including the production of fertilizer and the land use change, will even be less than the amount of energy output by the ethanol. If that is the case, then the use of ethanol will produce even more greenhouses gases
As you can see, ethanol just won't work. And besides, there are so many more good sources of clean energy, such as hydroelectric, solar, wind, and tidal power plants, and we can use clean-coal plants as a short-term solution while phasing in truly clean energy. Don't believe the lies, and "just say no" to ethanol
